Speaking Axolotl ,La Area Bahia’s long runing Chicano/Latinx reading series, is a decolonised monthly poetic space and open mic that happens in our galeria the 3rd Thursday of each month.
This week our very special features are Moncho Alvarado and Hilary Cruz Mejía.
Moncho Alvarado is a sister in residence in air, a Cihuayollotl trans Xicanx poet, translator, visual artist, and educator. She is the author of Greyhound Americans (Saturnalia Books 2022), which was the winner of the 2020 Saturnalia Book Prize, selected by Diane Seuss. She has been published in Hayden Ferry Review, Foglifter, Poets.org, and other publications. She is a recipient of fellowships and residencies from The Helene Wurlitzer Foundation and others. Hilary Cruz Mejía (they/she/elle) is a poet and activist from the coastal waters of Guatemala. Her work has appeared in a couple of online magazines. Hilary’s transition to the U.S. as a queer, immigrant, and first-generation college student has been presented in her poetry where she also encourages her readers to preserve the indigenous roots of the lands that were stolen. Outside of writing, she spends her time learning her abuela’s recipes, decolonizing her tongue, and keeping on track with her homework. Follow her on Instagram @hilary_natasha
