Hope in Hopeless Times(a free two day event sponsored by CIIS)

  • 3036 24th Street San Francisco, CA 94110 USA (map)

The Anthropology and Social Change department at CIIS is hosting this free two day event with talks by John Holloway.

Today’s event is titled “Life Against Money, Money Against Life”.

The rule of money is quite literally destroying life. Money impoverishes our richness. Money, as a way of relating to one another, destroys lives today and it is increasingly clear that its rule is taking us closer to the possibility of human extinction. Hope means abolishing money. Madness! How can we abolish money?

John Holloway is a professor in the graduate school in sociology of the Instituto de Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades “Alfonso Vélez Pliego” in the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla in Mexico. His books, Change the World without taking Power (first published by Pluto Press, London, in 2002) and Crack Capitalism (first published by Pluto Press, London, in 2010) have each been translated into a dozen languages and have stirred international controversy. The third book of the trilogy, Hope in Hopeless Times was published by Pluto in 2022.

CIIS offers low-residency MAs and PhDs that emphasize activism and social justice through scholarship. CIIS is a stand-alone graduate school in the south of market area of San Francisco.
