Book Release Party for Bucky Sinister’s To Fear and Love Bambi Lake

  • 3036 24th Street San Francisco, CA 94110 USA (map)

Join Bucky Sinister and Alvin Orloff for an evening of reading and conversation about Bucky’s new book “To Fear and Love Bambi Lake”

“A clear-eyed and compassionate story about a controversial icon, written with love and style. Fantastic.”—Michelle Tea

They’re a striking pair—one glamorous, the other a punk misfit. When chaos is your playground, anything can happen. On San Francisco’s art scene, you’re only as good as your latest performance.

Bambi Lake: Transgender chanteuse, determined to make the city fall in love with her through her heartfelt stage performances.

Bucky Sinister: A naïve boy from Arkansas, who desperately wants to become a subcultural spoken word hero.

To Fear and Love Bambi Lake is both an elegy for the titular character as well as a chronicle of their friendship that lasted for over a decade before finally burning out. Captivating, fun, and hilariously snide, this memoir is a tale that could only happen in the 1990s of San Francisco.

Alvin Orloff lives in San Francisco and is the proprietor of Fabulosa Books, a literary hot-spot in the heart of the Castro District. He was a performer with The Popstitutes, a somewhat absurd performance art/homocore band. In 1990 he and his bandmates founded Klubstitute, a floating queer cabaret devoted to the ideal of cultural democracy that featured spoken word, theater, drag, and musical acts. His latest novel is Vulgarian Rhapsody.

Bucky Sinister lived all over the Bay Area until 2016. For many years, he ran a poetry open mike at 853 Valencia, once known as The Chameleon. He was a founding member of The Business, a standup comedy show that took place at The Dark Room, Lost Weekend Video, and The Hemlock Tavern. To Fear and Love Bambi Lake is his eighth book. He now lives in Los Angeles.
